The topic of this webinar — openly and honestly facing the suffering within us — is chosen because everyone, to some degree, hides from reality and continues to suffer needlessly. Poet Whitney Hanson expressed her trying to make herself face her demons in a poem that opens: In English we say: “You’re not healing, you’re hiding. In poetry we say: “I dare you; I dare you to stop doing that thing that numbs the pain.” Hanson dares us to face the ways we trick ourselves into thinking that we are healing when, in fact, we are hiding from our pain, thus perpetuating it. Furthermore, she concludes, if we don’t face our demons, they will make us sick or even kill us.
