Psychologists are changing their thinking about A.D.H.D., looking at it now as a set of behaviors that exist on a spectrum. This means that behaviors are seen as the result of interactions between individuals and their environments. That range is from what people commonly experience to what some exceptional people experience. Experience thus ranges from “neurotypical” to “atypical.” Furthermore, like autism and narcissism, A.D.H.D. is seen as a neurodevelopmental condition whose expression depends not only on one’s development but also to a considerable extent on an individual’s social context.
This means that as individuals we are all on the A.D.H.D. spectrum, just as we are all on the autism and narcissism spectra. Recognizing this, we can look at our behavior and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, and of our strengths and our weaknesses.
